Ashtanga Yoga: Yoga in the Tradition of Sri K Pattabhi Jois

By Petri Räisänen

Aṣṭānga yoga is a practice and philosophy that develops one’s psychological and spiritual health. […] It has not endured by staying fixed in the past, rather it is a living tradition that has maintained its integrity while adjusting to people’s needs and the demands of the time.

Petri conducted a series of interviews with Sri K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois during his visits to practice in Mysore in 2003-2004. From these interviews, and a collaboration with New York portrait photographer Alexander Berg, and of course Petri’s own experience with the Ashtanga Yoga practice, comes this beautiful book. I was lucky enough to meet Petri at a workshop in London when the book was being launched in English.

Looking at the history and philosophy of Ashtanga Yoga, and then stepping through each asana in the primary series, the book is a union of beautiful photography and detailed asana technique. It’s truly ‘yoga’ in print. If you would like to read more about this book, it has its own website http://www.ashtangabook.com/.
