The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali

By Edwin F Bryant

Now, the teachings of yoga are presented. Yoga is the stilling of the changing states of the mind. When that is accomplished, the seer abides in its own true nature. Otherwise, at other times, the seer is absorbed in the changing states of the mind.

The first four lines of Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras are so direct, so clear. It’s not uncommon to get caught up in all the peripheral aspects of what we call ‘yoga’ today, but coming back to this simple definition still opens a whole lifetime of exploration and investigation. Why add more?

At 600 pages, Bryant’s edition of The Yoga Sūtras is full of analysis and commentary on the 196 sutras, drawing across insights from the primary classic commentators, but with precise and clear English translation, authenticity and academic rigour. My ‘go to’ edition and highly recommended if you want a detailed study of The Yoga Sūtras. And also recommended by Greg Nardi.
