Lucy Crawford Scott assisted Mysore practice and workshops

Lucy Crawford Scott assisted Mysore practice and workshops

September 2014 saw me visit BAYoga Studio in Berkhamsted for the first time for a weekend of assisted Mysore-style morning practice sessions and afternoon workshops with Lucy Crawford.

It was a warm weekend, the last real flush of summer, and I felt very at ease with my practice. Lucy’s adjustments and teaching are always very specific and that was just what I needed. In the afternoon workshops we explored foundations in asana practice, in various different forms.

Stillpoint Yoga London Ashtanga Yoga Charity Class

On 4 January 2014, Stillpoint Yoga London joined with John Scott, Lucy Crawford and 101 practitioners, friends and family to remember Ozge Karabiyik, co-founder of Stillpoint Yoga London, who died in January 2012. The day raised over £3,000 for The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

You can read more about the day in the SYL website posting ‘Beginning By Remembering – The SYL Charity Class 2014‘.

The day was doubly special for me as someone from the self-practice group at Whitespace Studio was also able to make it to the practice. Four generations of paramparā.

Stillpoint Yoga London Mini Documentary

Stillpoint Yoga London Mini Documentary

In March 2013, Stillpoint Yoga London published a short documentary about Ashtanga Yoga and the history of Stillpoint Yoga London, founded by Scott Johnson and Ozge Karabiyik. It includes interviews with my teachers: Scott Johnson, John Scott, Lucy Crawford and David Keil.

I was lucky enough to find Stillpoint Yoga London in 2009 on the day Scott and Oz first opened the doors, and in many ways it’s been the home of my practice ever since. I owe so much to Scott, to Oz, to their teachers, and to everyone who I have met there. In the documentary, Scott describes Ashtanga Yoga as being:

“about you creating a practice for yourself, that you own, that you can fit in your life. It’s not about anyone else. It’s about you becoming responsible for your own yoga practice. And that can be as dynamic as it needs to be.”

Ashtanga Yoga is sometimes thought of as a very rigid practice and a very physical form of yoga, but this is very far from where I feel it is and where I hope my own teaching comes from.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher training

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher training

In March 2013 I completed the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher training with John Scott, in the lineage of Sri K Pattabi Jois.

This was an amazing experience and deeply humbling. During this training I met so many amazing practitioners of Ashtanga Yoga and learnt so much. John Scott, Lucy Crawford, David Keil and Greg Nardi will always have my gratitude, as will everyone who went through the experience with me.

“It’s just a simple question” will never be the same again!

Remembering Ozge

Remembering Ozge

On 30 December 2012, Stillpoint Yoga London hosted a wonderful day of celebration and remembrance in honour of Ozge Karabiyik, who died in January 2012. With teaching by John Scott and Lucy Crawford, the day raised £1,400 in aid of Centrepoint.

I was really grateful to be able to share this day with Brigitte, Brian, Sue and Chris, who travelled with me from Milton Keynes for their first visit to Stillpoint, along with Scott, John, Lucy and many Stillpoint friends.
